How to make a sudoku book for Amazon KDP
A sudoku book is one of the simplest puzzle books to publish on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). The inside of the book is just puzzles and their solutions, so most of the work is choosing a clear layout and checking that every page prints well. This guide walks through the whole process.
1. Decide who the book is for
Before you make anything, pick one reader. "Large print easy sudoku for seniors" and "expert sudoku for experienced solvers" are two very different books. A clear reader helps you choose the trim size, the difficulty, and how many puzzles to put on each page. Mixing every level in one book can work, but a single level is easier to describe in your title and easier for buyers to choose.
2. Choose the trim size
The trim size is the size of the finished book. 8.5 × 11 inches is the usual choice for large print, because each grid can be big. 6 × 9 inches is cheaper to print and easy to carry, but you will fit fewer puzzles per page if you want them readable. Read our guide to KDP trim sizes and margins for puzzle books for the details.
3. Pick the difficulty
Difficulty mostly comes from how many numbers are given at the start (the clues) and which solving methods the puzzle needs. Fewer clues usually means harder. See sudoku difficulty levels explained for what each level means.
4. Plan the pages
A typical layout is one or two puzzles per page in the main section and four to six smaller solutions per page at the back. For large print, use one puzzle per page. Remember that KDP paperbacks need at least 24 pages, so a 100 puzzle book at two per page with solutions at six per page lands around 70 pages, which is a comfortable size.
5. Add the front pages
Most puzzle books start with a title page, a copyright page, and a short "how to play" page. These make the book feel finished and help new solvers.
6. Make the PDF
Open the puzzle book maker, choose Sudoku, set your count, difficulty, trim size and layout, then choose Generate book. Look through the pages on screen, then save the PDF from Chrome or Edge with margins set to None.
7. Check before you upload
Open the PDF and check the page count, that nothing is cut off at the edges, and that the solutions match their puzzle numbers. Upload it as your paperback interior, then use KDP's previewer, which will flag anything outside the margins. Our puzzle book checklist before you publish on KDP covers everything to look at.
